IMDDC provides a clear academic progression from Foundation through Grade 8, enabling learners to build knowledge, technique and performance skills step by step.
From Foundation to Grade 8
The IMDDC grade framework is designed to give learners a structured path for continuous development. Each stage builds on the previous level, with increasing academic, practical and performance expectations.
The framework covers Foundation and Grades 1 through 8. There is no Grade 9 in the current IMDDC structure.
Eight Progressive Stages
Each level represents a defined stage of learning, preparation and assessment across the selected music or dance programme.
Foundation
Build basic awareness, orientation and introductory skills before entering progressive grade study.
Grade 1
Develop fundamental concepts, technique and confidence through structured programme learning.
Grade 2
Strengthen foundational skills with increased musical, technical and practical expectations.
Grade 3
Build greater fluency, discipline and performance readiness across the chosen discipline.
Grade 4
Move into more developed repertoire, technique and structured examination preparation.
Grade 5
Expand technical control, interpretation and practical application through disciplined study.
Grade 6
Demonstrate stronger command, maturity and consistency within the selected programme.
Grade 7
Develop advanced repertoire, deeper understanding and higher standards of performance.
Grade 8
Complete the current progressive framework with advanced academic and practical achievement.

The current examination fee structure groups the progressive levels into three bands.
